Smudge, Me, and God

This evening (June 26), God provided me with a real life analogy (I think that’s the right word.?.?.?) of how we are in God’s arms. I found it very comforting and I felt like God was calling me to share this, so I thought I would share it with you guys as well. I tried my best to form my thoughts into words. Here it is.

You know that when you have a pet, you need to provide for them. You give them food. You give them water. You take them outside. You clean their litter pans. You take them to the vet. You play with them. You do everything you can to take care of them,

I don’t know how to connect the previous paragraph to the next one, so just know that they are separate ideas.

I walked in my room and found Smudge laying in my room elongated with her legs stretching in opposite directions. Naturally, I went to go rub her belly and then pick her up. I laid down on the floor on my back and put her on her side on me. After a few minutes she rolled over to her back, but still on me. I had an “ottering” Smudge on me. I pet her and hugged her and was reminded of how this situation was like me being in God’s arms.

Smudge was in this position. (Click here for original source.)

If you don’t know, Smudge is that cat who is just the sweetest but also the scared one. Her meow is so small and cute. She gets scared pretty easily. When she is scared, she usually does one or a combination of the following: runs, hisses, or growls. Everything that scares her makes loud noises or sudden movements.

The garage door is directly below my bedroom. It was opened and therefore started to make a noise. In response, Smudge sort of growled. She did not move, only growled. I hugged her a little tighter, pet her, and told her it would be okay. This is when God gave His message to me.

I have some big changes happening in my life right now and within the next few months. That night when I was snuggling with Smudge, I had been worrying about change. I do not really like big changes and so I was getting a little bit overwhelmed.

In this analogy, I am Smudge and God is me. I am in God’s arms and He is saying its going to be okay. You don’t need to worry about it. I’ve got you. I will provide for you.

Smudge is small in comparison to me. I am small in comparison to God. Smudge can’t take care of herself on her own. I can’t take care of myself on my own. My family provides for Smudge. God provides for me. Smudge doesn’t have to do anything to be loved by me. I don’t have to do anything to be loved or saved by God. Smudge is scared. I am scared. I am there for Smudge. God is there for me.

And I was just really comforted by that thought.

It has felt really good to tell you guys about this. I pray that this post has comforted at least one person today. That it has helped at least one person grow in their relationship with the Lord. That it has helped at least one person come to Christ.

I want to share some verses with you guys.

Luke 12:22-24, 27-28

Then Jesus said to his disciples: “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes. Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you?”

Philippians 4:6-7

Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

John 14:27

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Isaiah 53:5

But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
    and by his wounds we are healed.

John 16:33

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

2 Chronicles 20:15

He said: “Listen, King Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God’s.

Exodus 14:14

The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.

Isaiah 41:13

For I am the Lord your God
    who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear;
    I will help you.

Proverbs 12:25

Anxiety weighs down the heart,
    but a kind word cheers it up.

John 10:15

 Just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Proverbs 18:10

The name of the Lord is a fortified tower;
    the righteous run to it and are safe.

The last thing I wanted to do in this post was invite you to comment below some advice you have about going through change. On August 9th, I will put a post together with everyone’s advice in hopes that it will encourage someone. So please comment any advice you have on going through big or little changes down below.

Thank you guys!

  1. Hi Heidi! This is awesome! Here’s my advice for someone going through a change:

    Change is hard. I know from experience. But here’s some advice that has helped me throughout the years. I’ve always loved the saying everything happens for a reason. When I’m struggling, I try to find the positive. If something is changing for you whether it be moving, a new sibling, a new school, or something else, there will always be a positive. Also, remember that you are loved and you ARE NOT ALONE. Stay strong and keep on being a light to others. ❤

    This was such a great idea, Heidi! Thanks for letting me participate in this!

  3. Great post, Heidi! Oh my goodness, my cat does that otter thing too… he loves to roll around on the floor! This post was so amazing, such a sweet and great metaphor and an amazing god moment!
    Change is hard, but we just have to trust that it will get better… right?

    1. Yes, thank you!
      It’s so funny the things cats do. Smudge also likes to lay in a variety of positions in the middle of the floor instead of under a piece of furniture or in a corner or up high somewhere. She does those things too, but the middle of the floor one is just funny.
